Why Teeth Stain

Teeth Whitening PhiladelphiaWhile the hard, porcelain-like enamel of teeth is naturally white, your smile can become discolored for a variety of reasons. Routine wear-and-tear on tooth enamel caused by chewing can lead to small cracks in protective enamel that fill up with stain-causing debris. When these cracks are present, continued exposure to darkly pigmented products like coffee, soda, wine, and tobacco results in conspicuous stains.

However, the simple process of aging can cause dental discoloration as well. Enamel wears down over time, causing the surfaces of teeth to become more transparent.  When this happens, the darkly-colored tooth core (known as “dentin”) shows through, causing smiles to appear dull and gray.

If you are experiencing dental discoloration and would like to learn more about teeth whitening options, consult with Dr. Tobey in his Philadelphia office today!

The Teeth Whitening Process

Teeth whitening treatments, also known as teeth bleaching, are among the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments available today. Dr. Tobey uses the Rembrandt® and Zoom!® power teeth bleaching methods, which produce incredible results in approximately one hour.

Most patients are completely comfortable throughout the teeth whitening process. First, Dr. Tobey exposes the teeth being treated by inserting a cheek retractor. Then, a protective coating—either a liquid rubber dam or hardening resin—is painted onto the gums to prevent irritation.

During the Zoom!® treatment, a 25-percent hydrogen peroxide gel is painted onto the teeth, and exposed to the Zoom!® Advanced Power Chairside Lamp, which accelerates the bleaching process. The gel is applied three times, and each application is left on for approximately fifteen minutes.

The Rembrandt® treatment is similar, exposing the 25-percent hydrogen peroxide gel to a plasma arc light unit known as the Rembrandt® Sapphire for approximately 30 minutes.  During this time, patients are free to read magazines, watch TV, or simply relax.

Both treatment systems are capable of whitening teeth up to 10 shades in just one office visit. However, your results will depend upon a variety of factors, including your initial level of dental discoloration. It is important to discuss your goals and expectations with Dr. Tobey.

Maintaining Your Smile

After your teeth whitening treatment, Dr. Tobey may issue an at-home maintenance kit, or may recommend periodic in-office touch-ups. Depending on your individual needs and lifestyle, these touch-ups may be as infrequent as once a year. Although the results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, exercising care can make your results long-lasting. As always, excellent oral hygiene is critical in maintaining a beautiful, healthy mouth, so be sure to brush and floss regularly, and visit the dentist for routine cleanings.
