General Dentistry Philadelphia
A Beautiful Smile Starts with a Healthy Mouth
General dentistry is dedicated to helping you maintain the health of your teeth and gums. The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist once every six months to prevent, or ensure swift diagnosis and treatment of, any oral disorders.
Keeping your smile healthy is the best way to keep it beautiful. Contact Dr. Richard S. Tobey, Jr., an experienced practitioner of cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry, at his Philadelphia office today.
Routine Cleanings
A routine office visit typically consists of a dental exam, x-rays, and a teeth cleaning performed by a dental hygienist. Using an instrument known as a “scaler,” the hygienist will remove plaque and tartar that has built up over time. Then, your teeth will be polished, flossed, and treated with fluoride. During your dental exam, Dr. Tobey will examine your mouth for cavities and other signs of oral disease.
General Dentistry Treatments
If your mouth shows signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or any other oral disorder, Dr. Tobey may perform one of several general dentistry procedures.
Extractions
When a tooth, or its surrounding tissue, has been badly damaged by cavities or gum disease, it may need to be removed. The space created by an extraction can be filled by one of several replacement options. Dr. Tobey will discuss dental implant restorations, full and partial dentures, and bridges with you.
Fillings
Fillings are a very common general dentistry treatment. When teeth are damaged by cavities, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed. The tooth is then filled with amalgam, composite resin, or tooth-colored inlays or on lays.
Periodontal Treatments
If your gums are showing signs of gingivitis or periodontitis, Dr. Tobey will develop a treatment plan to halt the progression of the disease. Depending upon the condition’s severity, this treatment may include in-office deep cleanings, antibiotics, or surgical procedures.
Orthodontic Treatments
When teeth are showing signs of “malocclusions,” or improper bites, Dr. Tobey can bring them into proper alignment using traditional braces, Invisalign®, or other dental appliances. To learn more, contact Dr. Tobey’s general dentistry practice in Philadelphia area today!
Dentistry for Your Lifestyle
In addition to preventing tooth decay and oral disease, general dentistry can address certain attributes that may be affecting your lifestyle.
Snoring Prevention
If you or a loved one is having difficulty sleeping due to snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Tobey may be able to help! Certain dental appliances, worn at night, can bring the jaw forward, reducing or eliminating snoring.
Fresh Breath Care
Chronic halitosis can be the result of tooth decay or gum disease. Dr. Tobey knows how important fresh breath can be in personal and professional settings, which is why he uses bacteria-fighting periodontal treatments to cure, rather than mask, halitosis.
Nightguards
“Bruxism” refers to the habitual grinding of teeth. Because “bruxers” often grind their teeth during their sleep, a dentist may prescribe a custom-fitted nightguard to prevent serious damage to tooth enamel.
