Dental Implants Philadelphia

Reliable Solutions for Tooth Loss

Dental implants are an effective, natural-looking solution for patients with missing teeth. Removable dentures can slip out of place, and traditional dental bridges can cause discomfort while speaking and chewing. Dental implants provide a more permanent solution, anchoring prosthetic teeth—in the form of crowns, bridges, or even a full set of dentures—directly to the jaw bone.

Placing Dental Implants

Although dental surgery may seem daunting, the results achieved are both valuable and long-lasting. Patient comfort is given the utmost consideration, and dental implants are placed in a series of outpatient procedures.

During the first surgery, an incision is made to expose the jawbone, and a hole is drilled into the edentulous jaw site (the space in your jaw where the tooth is missing). The titanium implant screw, which will act as the artificial tooth “root,” is then inserted into the hole, and covered by protective gum tissue. Over a period of two to six months, the incision site will heal, and the titanium screw will fuse with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration.

After healing has taken place, a second procedure is performed to uncover the titanium implant and attach an abutment, which will serve as the anchor for the crown or prosthetic tooth. Depending upon your individual case, Dr. Tobey may attach a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready to be placed.

Your dental implant restoration will be complete when you return approximately two weeks later to have your permanent crown or prosthetic tooth placed. With your new dental implants, you will be free to enjoy an improved quality of life, with a renewed ability to speak clearly, smile confidently, and eat the foods you love without hesitation.

Aesthetic Benefits of Dental Implants

While dental implants offer patients the functional benefits of increased stability, they provide cosmetic benefits as well. As in all of our restorations, the prosthetic teeth supported by dental implants are custom-crafted to look and feel exactly like a patient’s natural teeth. However, dental implants allow these teeth to be attached below the gum line, so the results are lifelike and comfortable.

Maintaining Your Dental Implants

As with any cosmetic dentistry treatment, maintaining an excellent oral hygiene regimen is essential to ensuring the long-term success of your dental implant procedure. Careful brushing and flossing will help dental implants fuse with the jawbone, ensuring firmness and reliability. And, with proper care, your dental implant restorations can remain intact for up to 40 years.
