Dental Crowns Philadelphia
Restoring Appearance and Function to Damaged Teeth
Dental crowns, also known as “caps,” serve a variety of functions. They can completely encapsulate a damaged tooth, function as the prosthetic attached to a dental implant post, or anchor a dental bridge. Because dental crowns cover the entire visible area of the tooth, from the gum line upward, they are an excellent way to restore a tooth’s aesthetic and function. An all-ceramic dental crown is designed to blend in with surrounding teeth, creating attractive, natural-looking results.

Placing Dental Crowns
Placing a dental crown is a procedure typically accomplished in two office visits. During your first visit, Dr. Tobey will examine the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone to confirm that you are in adequate oral health to receive your crown. However, if your teeth are not in ideal condition for the placement of dental crowns, you may require additional treatment prior to receiving your dental restorations.
The area surrounding the tooth being treated will then be numbed and reshaped. The tooth’s enamel must be filed down in order to accommodate the dental crown. Conversely, if the crown is being placed to cover a severely damaged tooth, Dr. Tobey may need to bulk up your existing tooth rather than reduce it. In this case, a filling material such as amalgam or composite resin will be applied to the tooth in order to create a surface capable of supporting the crown.
Once the surface of the tooth has been reshaped, Dr. Tobey will make an impression of your mouth that will serve as a template for creating the permanent dental crown. The permanent crown will be custom-made to fit your mouth, incorporate easily into your bite, and match the color of your existing teeth as closely as possible. Because dental crowns must be specially manufactured in a dental laboratory, you will likely be fitted with a temporary crown in the interim.
Functions of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are excellent restorative options for teeth that have been badly damaged, and can be used in a variety of situations:
- A tooth with a large filling may require extra support, which can be provided by dental crowns.
- In the case of missing teeth, dental crowns provide an ideal prosthetic for dental implants, or can be used to anchor a dental bridge.
- Dental crowns restore the functionality and appearance of teeth that have been misshapen, discolored, broken, or worn down.
- In some cases, a dental crown may be used as a protective measure, being placed on a weakened tooth that is susceptible to decay and breaking to prevent further damage.
