Philadelphia Dentist - Richard S. Tobey, Jr., D.M.D

Teeth Whitening Procedure Aftercare

May 16, 2011 @ 10:20 PM — by drtobey

If you have teeth that are discolored or stained, it’s important that you consider undergoing teeth whitening treatment with a trained professional like Dr. Richard S. Tobey, Jr. Getting professional teeth whitening with a Philadelphia cosmetic dentist is much more effective than using over-the-counter teeth whitening products. The reason for this is that the systems that dentists use for teeth whitening treatment tend to be stronger and more sophisticated than the ones you can get at the local store.

Yet the sophistication doesn’t mean that teeth whitening with a professional is an inconvenient or harmful process. There are a few things you must keep in mind following treatment, however. Right now, we’d like to go over the basic teeth whitening treatment and discuss some basic things to keep in mind once the whitening treatment is completed.

During the Philadelphia teeth whitening treatment, your teeth are first cleaned off thoroughly. This is done to ensure that any plaque or food particles are not present during the dental bleaching as they will have a negative affect on the results. The next step is the application of the bleaching agent, which is the substance that will cause the teeth to be bleached. This bleaching agent is then exposed to a special light which enhances the whitening capacity of the bleaching agent. That’s pretty much it, and it’s all completed in about an hour.

It should be noted that some patients experience tooth sensitivity following teeth whitening treatment. If that is the case, Dr. Tobey can administer a desensitizer in order to reduce any discomfort. Whether your teeth are sensitive after treatment or not, it’s advisable that you brush your teeth with a toothbrush that has soft bristles and that you rinse with lukewarm water.

It’s important that you also consider quitting smoking after teeth whitening treatment to prevent stains forming again after treatment. The same goes about practicing moderation when it comes to foods and beverages that cause tooth discoloration, such as coffee, tea, colas, red wine, red sauces, curry, blueberries, blackberries, and so on. Be sure to clean your teeth as usual to help keep stains from forming.
